Awakening the Dragon Within

A Journey of Power, Protection, and Earth Wisdom
By Virginia Underwood

For the last six years, something ancient has been awakening in me—a wild, wise, elemental energy that at first whispered, then roared. It began in a shamanic journey, when a black dragon emerged and spoke directly to my soul:
“It is time to take your power back.”

That dragon was my first teacher in this realm. He told me the Divine Feminine was rising—and that I carried part of her fire.

Around the same time, I was led to a book that spoke of the Tibetan Dakinis—fierce, transformational emanations of the feminine. I began working with their energy daily in meditation for over a year. They helped me see clearly how I had been carrying distorted masculine patterns—codependency, self-abandonment, the fear of fully expressing myself. Their presence, along with the black dragon, ignited a reckoning and a reclamation.

And that was only the beginning.

The Return of Dragon Energy on Earth

Across the planet, many are feeling it: the dragons are stirring.

Dragons have always lived in our collective memory—as guardians of sacred sites, protectors of ley lines (or “dragon lines”), and keepers of Earth’s deepest wisdom. From the Celtic wyrm to the Chinese lung, from Quetzalcoatl to the rainbow serpents of Aboriginal lore, dragons have walked beside humanity for millennia.

Now, as Gaia herself enters a higher frequency, the dragons are awakening again—both within the Earth and within us. They are here to help us remember: who we are, what we’re capable of, and why we came.

It’s no coincidence that 2024 was the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, and 2025 is the Year of the Snake—another powerful symbol of transformation, rebirth, and elemental energy rising through the body.

My Journey: From Black to Red, and the Ceremonial Path in Peru

The black dragon came first. He carried the energy of protection, deep earth wisdom, and fierce feminine truth. His presence cracked open old patterns and demanded that I stop playing small.

Then came the red dragon, more recently—showing up in dreams, symbols, and spontaneous conversations. She is passionate, courageous, and emboldening. Her energy invites me into visibility, creative power, and full expression.

This past winter, I traveled to Peru, and I could feel I was living directly on a dragon line. The energy of the land pulsed beneath my feet—vibrant, alive, intelligent. I was called into ceremony again and again, not only with the dragons but with the sacred plant medicine San Pedro—a teacher known for healing the heart and softening the wounded masculine.

Together, the dragons and San Pedro guided me into deeper healing and balance. I met layers of myself I hadn’t known. I felt my spine straighten, my voice deepen, and my inner fire stabilize. These ceremonies were not just healing. They were initiations.

How Dragon Energy May Be Awakening in You

You may be feeling this awakening in your own way. This energy often begins quietly, then rises like a tide. Signs include:

  • Vivid dreams or visions of dragons, serpents, or winged beings

  • A sudden emotional fire—anger, passion, or the need to break free

  • Drawn to elemental energies: fire, storm, mountain, river

  • A deepening connection to the land or sacred sites

  • Feeling protective over the Earth or your own energy

  • A remembering of past lives, gifts, or ancient lineages

  • Synchronicities involving dragons, snakes, or fierce feminine symbols

If any of this resonates, you’re not imagining it. You are awakening.

How to Work with Dragon Energy

Dragons are not fantasies—they are powerful energetic allies and reflections of your soul’s deeper knowing. To work with them:

  • Create a sacred space: Light a candle in a color that resonates with the dragon you feel drawn to—red, black, green, gold, silver, white, or blue. Let it reflect the elemental energy you're working with.

  • Journey inward: Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Ask, “Which dragon walks with me now?” Allow an image or energy to form.

  • Move and breathe: Use breathwork, dance, or sound to stir the energy. Let your body move like a dragon. Let the fire rise.

  • Make offerings: Dragons respond to reverence and reciprocity. Offer flowers, cacao, tea, tobacco, or a heartfelt prayer.

  • Ask questions: What am I here to protect? What am I here to transform? What do you want me to remember?

Dragon Ceremony for Inner Power & Masculine Healing

Inspired by my time in Peru, this ceremony bridges dragon energy and the healing of the inner masculine:

  1. Find a sacred place, indoors or outdoors, ideally near earth, fire, or stone.

  2. Set your intention: “I call forth the dragon within me, and I welcome the healing of the sacred masculine.”

  3. Light a candle in a color you’re guided toward.

  4. Place offerings: A feather, cacao, tea, flower, or anything meaningful.

  5. Visualize your inner masculine—perhaps as a child, guide, or archetype. See the dragons surrounding and healing him.

  6. Use movement or sound: Let your body be a vessel. Shake, drum, hum, cry. Let it move through you.

  7. Ask for a message, and journal what you receive.

  8. Give thanks, blow out your candle, and leave your offering in nature if possible.

You Are Not Alone

If dragons are waking up in you, welcome them. They come not to dominate, but to activate. Not to save, but to remind.

They teach us to burn away illusion, to protect what’s sacred, and to stand fully in our fierce, embodied truth.

This is the path of the dragon.
And we are rising.
